The Origins of Basketball

The first father of basket ball is Dr. James Naismith. Dr. James Naismith is a Canadian professor who works at the International Young Men’s Christian Association Training School (YMCA). It all starts when Dr. James was thinking of a way to let his class continue in practicing despite of the rainy weather outside. Finally, a though came to his mind. After listing down a number of rules, he took a peach basket and nailed it to an elevated track that is 10 foot high.

Unlike the modern basketball, the peach basketball retains its bottom. Later, Dr. James modify the game by removing the bottom of the basket. Due to the shape of the basket, the ball cannot goes through so a dowel is used to poke it out. In 1906, the metal hoops with blackboards are invented. The metal hoop is redesigned again so that the ball can goes through it just like in the modern game. Whenever the ball is put into the peach basket, a point is rewarded to the team. The team that is rewarded with the most points will win the game. Initially, the metal basket was installed on the lowest balcony in the basketball court. The fans always stood on top of the balcony to cheer.  When they find out that the fans are interfering with the game, they use the backboard to nail the basket.

In 2006, Dr. James granddaughter find out that the game include some rules of a childhood game called Duck on a Rock. The YMCA is the first organization to officially hold the basketball in the gymnasium o 20th January 1892. In 1897, the standard numbers of members in the basketball team is five. In 1892, Senda Berenson modified the rules setup by Dr. James Naismith and created the first Women basketball. In the later years, basketball quickly spread to United States to Canada and surge in popularity.
